Matt’s Samurai 7 Comparison

Spoilers, btw if you plan on watching it, but;
So, having recently watched Samurai 7, with the knowledge that we have 7 Samurai, I was able to draw similar lines between each of us and the men from that shows. I enjoyed doing that as I watched, made quite a few chuckles. There are some obvious faults that just don’t mix, like
a) all men &
b) None of them seemed to mind tricky tactics, which is a no-no in rokugan. But ignoring that the character similarities are quite strong. And looks seldom match, so it’s a personality thing.

Utaku Aeko Vs. Okamoto Katsushiro
Okamoto katsushiro

Similarities,
Both characters have a strong moral code they follow, Aeko being a Paragon of Compassion, and Katsu often stepping up to help the peasants and the weak. He often disobeys his Sensei, following what he believes is right. Katsu fights a few fights on horseback with a bow, as Aeko has as well, and is also good with Katana. He also falls for the only female protagonist, Kirara, and ironically Aeko is in a similar romance.
Differences,
Gender, obviously. At the beginning of the show, Katsu is a novice, never having used his sword. He goes through the trials that come with that, as well as learning what being a samurai means, something that Aeko started the game with. Also, he does something Aeko would never at the end, but we’ll get more of that in Tetsuya’s section.
How he ends up,
Living through the final showdown, he declines staying with Kirara, and walks off on his own, to continue his ronin life. Did alright for himself

Bayushi Shinichiro Vs. Shimada Kambei
Images

Similarities,
The obvious leader, Kambei is the one who goes through the effort of assembling the team. Kambei similarly to Shinichiro is willing to do whatever it takes for the job he’s assigned, even admitting to a crime he didn’t do for an audience with the Emperor for an assassination attempt. Kambei is a master at Katana, second amoung the samurai only to Kyuzou (Tetsuya). Kambei takes on several stealth missions as well, and is able to forge alliances needed and build up troops to stop the bad guys.
Differences,
Not really much here, Kambei is an old war veteran, rather than the new rising magistrate. He jumps off a cliff to save a peasant girl once, not sure if Shinichiro would.
How he ends up,
Kambei also lives through the final showdown, and goes off with his ‘old wife’ Shichiroji (Tokei), back to where Tokei’s girlfriend runs a Geisha house. “It looks like we live yet again, my friend”

Yoritomo Ryurai Vs. Katayama Gorobei

Similarities,
Like Ryurai, Gorobei is smart and skilled, and seeks neither trouble nor violence. But when it comes to a fight, can hold their own. He also makes light of dangerous situations, smiling while dodging arrows and bullets. He often seems to be the one who knows most what’s going on, but is content to play in the shadow of the other samurai.
Differnces,
After the wars, Gorobei became a street performer, as the samurai’s era had run out. Ryurai won’t likely do any such thing. Ryurai also seems to strongly hold others responsible to their actions, where Gorobei was essentially okay however things went.
How he ends up,
The first to die, after deflecting a few bullets with his sword that come from a two story robot-samurai, the building behind him explodes onto him, dealing a lethal wound. His death was not in vain!

Mirumoto Tetsuya Vs. Kyuzou
Kyuzo

Similarities,
Both unrefined badasses, Kyuzou like Tetsuya is a master at wielding two swords. He also is terribly quiet, although not shy, and is a man of few words. Kyuzou is the loner of the group, and does little to help marshaling of forces, just as Tetsuya stays in the compound training in his spare time. He fights Kambei early in the show, and ever after seeks to finish their fight.
Differences,
Kyuzou, unlike Tetsuya kills often, and seems to relish in it. Kyuzou also is very perceptive, noticing ambushes and the like before anyone else. Kyouzou also started off working for one of them evil merchants, only to turn sides later.
How he ends up,
Early in the final showdown, he gets caught in a large explosion, disappearing for some time. He comes back for one more fight, but he’s accidentally killed by Katsushiro when Katsushiro used a gun to protect Kambei because his sword was broken. Well, could’ve gone better.

Matsu Ai Vs. Hayashida Heihachi
Images2

Similarities,
Heihachi, like Ai generally seem out of it. He would much rather stay back and eat and drink, rather than work. He is not the best in a fight, but takes out more than his share of enemies when the need arises. Heihachi does get serious from time to time, and becomes quite frightening when he does.
Differences,
Gender, obviously. Heihachi also works with machines, although that could be compared with magic, is quite different. Heihachi has a violent hatred for traitors, as in the wars he betrayed his comrades.
How he ends up,
After setting the bombs to bring the floating city crashing down, he gets squished by a large pillar. He then activates the bombs, blowing away half the city and then being crushed by it. Quite a bad-ass way to go. His last words were “I wish I had eaten more rice”

Yoritomo Tomino Vs. Kikuchiyo
Kikuchiyo

Similarities,
Kikuchiyo, like Tomino is brash, and will often speak what is on his mind. He often gives a lack of authority when his personal beliefs or motives are at stake. He seldom listens to advice, often causing a little extra effort from those he was trying to help. Though not the best in combat, he often takes the rough road and does the tough tasks others don’t wish to, and usually comes up on top.
Differences,
Kukuchiyo’s a mechanical Samurai. And has a chainsaw sword. And was born a peasant. And would never do paperwork. Also cares a lot for the little folk that Tomino disregards.
How he ends up,
After getting badly hurt taking bullets for Kambei, he jumps off the once floating city and attempts to slow it down so that it won’t crash into the peasant village. All that remains afterwards are his boots. Quite the hero.

Tamori Tokei Vs. Shichiroji
Shichiroji momotaro 199

Similarities,
Tokei and Shichiroji are both that wise friend, that one you go to when you need a little help. He helps Kambei several times, and is considered his ‘old wife’, a term meaning old war friend. Shichiroji is also a bit odd, suggesting the plans that most would normally not. Shichiroji also has a fiance, whom he leaves in charge of their inn while he goes off to fight.
Differences,
Shichiroji uses a spear, and is very proficient with it, while Tokei is more the rock throwing badass. Shichiroji also has a mechanical had that works as a grappling hook.
How he ends up,
Shichiroji survives the final showdown, and returns to his fiance and works at the inn there. Peaceful ending for egg-shen.
