Shadowed Autumn Leaves
“Duty is cruel, but in the end, it is all we have.”
Appearance and Personality
By all accounts, Bayushi Uma is a regular thirteen year old courtier in training… or a regular heimin hand maiden, or farmhand, or merchant’s daughter; it all depends on how she presents herself in the moment. Uma is short, even for her young age, and slender as a bamboo stalk. Her face is sharp and has more than a passing resemblance to her namesake, a horse. Uma always seems to wear a knowing smile, no matter what role she is wearing at the time. Despite all her efforts to the contrary, Uma still acts very much her age and is prone to childishness and prideful boasting.
Little is known for certain about Bayushi Uma. She has a talent for watching people, discerning their motives, their secrets, and their weaknesses. Uma has a great deal of independence for a student, and has been seen watching her elder brother, Bayushi Shinichiro, and gloating endlessly at him, several times since his victory at the Topaz Championship. Her brother’s companions have taken to ignoring the often unpleasant little girl, and while there seems to be little love between the two siblings, Shinichiro always hears her out when she appears to him.
